Zithromax is an antibiotic, and like with any other antibiotic there are some things you should know about this type of drugs for using them properly, and avoiding any unpleasant side effects that may occur.
Zithromax makes part of a drug group referred to as macrolide antibiotics. There are two mechanisms in which a typical antibiotic might work. The drug may identify the bacteria and stop its multiplication (while the remaining bacteria is eliminated by the body's own immune system), or it may eliminate the bacteria directly. Macrolides work use the first mechanism. They do not form a habit and restrict the bacteria from reproducing. Macrolide antibiotics are differ from penicillin-based antibiotics structure-wise. If you have had an allergic reaction to a penicillin-based drug you can safely take macrolide antibiotics.
Like with any other prescription drug, you should follow the doctor’s recommendations when taking Zithromax. Many patients may wish to cease taking the drug immediately when feeling better. Those who take Zithromax as oral suspension won't face such a temptation, because there are approximately six or more pills in the pack that have to be taken as prescribed, usually once per day. Those who do not take the full course of Zithromax risk to experience a reclusion of the same disease or get infected with another. Because Zithromax restricts bacteria from multiplying, those who stop the course at mid-point will “enjoy” a longer treatment period. This is due to the fact that bacteria is likely to start multiplying again and even develop a resistance to Zithromax.
When taken as prescribed, macrolide antibiotic drugs will usually begin to take effect in just two to three days after you start a course. Depending on the disease and its severity, the patient will be prescribed with a course of Zithromax ranging one to two weeks. Some people with weaker immune systems may have to take Zithromax for longer periods of time. Like any other drugs, macrolides have certain side effects associated with their use. These side effects may include dry mouth or upset stomach but are generally not severe. In case you experience serious side effects consult with your doctor immediately. |
