Zithromax and Chlamydia infection in women

Chlamydia is a general curable sexually transmitted infection (STI), which is caused by tiny bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this sexually transmitted disease can injure a woman’s reproductive system. It is estimated that annually the rate of chlamydia infection is constantly rising, with much people being infected and unaware unaware of its existence.

Chlamydia is referred to as a “silent” disease, because it doesn't cause any significant symptoms at the initial stage of infection. In some cases, the effects may occur within 1-3 weeks after infection. As chlamydia is an asymptomatic infection, it is often unnoticed unless it causes major symptoms. If the infection is not treated soon enough, it may lead to severe damages to the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and uterus, causing infertility in women.

Chlamydia diagnosis is usually carried out at STI clinics or GUM clinics. In the past, the diagnosis was performed using instrument called a speculum, with which women were taken a swab from the cervix. Nowadays, the development of newer tests has lead to the possibility to diagnose Chlamydia at home, either by using a urine sample, or by taking a swab from the lower vagina. The sample is then placed in a container and sent to a laboratory for test. In case you are detected with chlamydia infection, it can be easily treated with antibiotics like Zithromax.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend either a single dose of Zithromax (azithromycin) 1 gm orally or a week of doxycycline100 mg orally twice a day for treating chlamydia infection.
You can also take a week of erythoromycin base 500 mg orally four times a day, or a week of erythoromycin ethylsuccinate 800 mg orally four times a day, or a week of ofloxacin 300 mg orally twice a day as alternative treatments.

All of the above-mentioned medications require a doctor or pharmacist to issue a prescription with strict dosage you have to follow. The effectiveness of treatment heavily relies on the way you take the drugs, so it's in your own interest to follow the prescriptions carefully.
